Malik ibn Sinan al Khudri

He is Sayyidina Malik ibn Sinan ibn ‘Ubaid ibn Tha’labah ibn al Abjar radiya Llahu ‘anhu. Al Abjar is Khidrah ibn ‘Awf ibn al Harith ibn al Khazraj. Sayyidina Malik is the father of Sayyidina Abu Sa’id al Ansari radiya Llahu ‘anhu. He was martyred in the Battle of Uhud by ‘Irab ibn Sufyan al Kinani. He brought his son to the Nabi salla Llahu ‘alayhi wa sallam and presented him to join the battle at the tender age of 13. However, Rasulullah salla Llahu ‘alayhi wa sallam did not consent.[1]

Guarantee of him entering Jannat appears in some ahadith, all strengthening each other.

Sa’id ibn Mansur reports in his Sunan and al Bayhaqi in al Dala’il from ‘Umar ibn al Sa’ib that it reached him that when Rasulullah salla Llahu ‘alayhi wa sallam was injured on the Day of Uhud, Malik, the father of Abu Sa’id al Khudri, sucked his injury until he cleansed it and it shone white.

He was told, “Spit it out.”

He said, “By Allah, I will never spit it out.”

He then turned around and rushed into the thick of battle. Rasulullah salla Llahu ‘alayhi wa sallam remarked, “Whoever desires to see a man from the people of Jannat should look at this martyr.”[2]

Hafiz Ibn Hajar labelled it mursal.[3]

Al Tabarani, al Hakim, Ibn Abi ‘Asim, and Abu al Qasim al Baghawi narrated it from the chain of Musa ibn Muhammad from―his mother from―Umm ‘Abdul Rahman ibn Abi Sa’id al Khudri from― Abu Sa’id with the wording:

أصيب وجه رسول الله صلى الله عليه و سلم يوم أحد فاستقبله مالك بن سنان فمص جرح رسول الله صلى الله عليه و سلم فقال رسول الله صلى الله عليه و سلم من سره أن ينظر إلى من خالط دمه دمي فلينظر إلى مالك بن سنان

Rasulullah’s salla Llahu ‘alayhi wa sallam face was injured in the Battle of Uhud. Malik ibn Sinan approached and sucked Rasulullah’s salla Llahu ‘alayhi wa sallam wound. Upon this, Rasulullah salla Llahu ‘alayhi wa sallam announced, “Whoever desires to look at a man whose blood has mixed with mines, should look at Malik ibn Sinan.”[4]

Musa ibn Muhammad appears therein.

A similar narration is recorded in Subul al Huda wa al Rashad from the chain of Mus’ab ibn al Asqa’ from―Rabih ibn ‘Abdul Rahman ibn Ismail from―Abu Sa’id, with similar wording, coupled with Rasulullah’s salla Llahu ‘alayhi wa sallam declaration:

من خالط دمي دمه لا يضره الله

Whoever’s blood is mixed in mines, Allah will not harm him.[5]

Rabih ibn ‘Abdul Rahman

  • Imam Ahmed commented, “He is not known.”[6]
  • Al Bukhari said, “Munkar al hadith (contradicts reliable narrators).” As quoted from him by al Tirmidhi in al ‘Ilal al Kabir.
  • Ibn Hibban lists him in al Thiqat (the reliable narrators).[7]
  • Ibn ‘Adi concludes his biography on the note, “I hope that there is no problem with him.”[8]
  • Hafiz comments on him in al Taqrib, “Accepted.”

In conclusion, with the combination of all of these chains, this hadith is classified as hassan li ghayrihi. And Allah knows best!
