Hadith 7

أن رسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم دفع الراية إلى علي رضي الله عنه يوم بدر وهو ابن عشرين سنة.

The Messenger of Allah salla Llahu ‘alayhi wa sallam handed the standard to ‘Ali radiya Llahu ‘anhu on the day of Badr and he was twenty years old.

Al Hakim al Naisaburi narrates — ‘Ali ibn Hamshad narrated to us — Muhammad ibn al Mughirah al Sukkari narrated to us — al Qasim ibn al Hakam al ‘Urani narrated to us — Mis’ar narrated to us from al Hakam ibn ‘Utaybah — from Miqsam — from ibn ‘Abbas radiya Llahu ‘anhuma.[1]

Al Hakim said, “This hadith is sahih (authentic) according to the conditions of both al Bukhari and Muslim, but they did not include it in their collections.” Imam al Dhahabi concurred with him.

I say (the author): The chain of transmission for the hadith is Hassan (fair) on account of the difference of opinion regarding al Qasim ibn al Hakam al ‘Urani. His narration has been corroborated.[2]

Then I (also) saw both al Albani grading this hadith as Hassan (fair) and Nur al Din al Haythami.[3]

[1] Al Hakim al Naisaburi: Mustadrak al Hakim, 4583.

[2] A corroborated report is when one transmitter corroborates the report related by another transmitter that they had both heard from a common source. [translator’s note]

[3] Al Albani: Irwaʾ al Ghalil, 8/133; Nur al Din al Haythami: Majma’ al Zawaʾid, 9/125.
