Hadith 40

سألت قثم بن العباس: كيف ورث علي رسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم دونكم؟ قال: لأنه كان أولنا به لحوقا وأشدنا به لزوقا.

I asked Qutham ibn al ‘Abbas, “How did ‘Ali inherit (i.e. knowledge) from the Messenger of Allah salla Llahu ‘alayhi wa sallam, and not all of you?” He said, “Because he was the first one from us to embrace the Prophet salla Llahu ‘alayhi wa sallam (i.e. to become Muslim) and the strongest of us to obey him salla Llahu ‘alayhi wa sallam.”

Ibn Abi Shaybah, al Nasa’i, al Tabarani, al Hakim, and others narrate from Abu Ishaq who said the hadith…[1]

Al Hakim authenticated the hadith and al Dhahabi concurred.

However, Abu Ishaq is mukhtalit[2] (commits serious errors). Therefore, the hadith is da’if (weak).

Al Nasa’i and others narrate — from ‘Affan ibn Muslim — Abu ‘Awanah narrated to us — from ‘Uthman ibn al Mughirah — from Abu Sadiq — from Rabi’ah ibn Najid. He mentioned a long report, the end of which stated, “So which one of you will pledge their allegiance to me to be my brother, my companion, and my warith (inheritor)?” He said, “With this I inherited from my cousin (i.e. from Nabi salla Llahu ‘alayhi wa sallam and not my uncle.”[3]

Al Dhahabi states, “Rabi’ah ibn Najid from ‘Ali is practically unknown. And Abu Sadiq narrates from Rabi’ah ibn Najid a munkar (unacceptable) report that contains the words ‘‘Ali is my brother and my warith (inheritor).”[4]

Al Mughalta’i, “In the book of al Sarifini, Abu Sadiq narrates from him (i.e. Rabi’ah ibn Najid) a munkar (unacceptable) report.”[5]

Therefore, the hadith is da’if (weak) in both chains of transmission.
