Hadith 34

The Messenger of Allah salla Llahu ‘alayhi wa sallam came to us on the evening of ‘Arafah and said, “Allah has boasted about you (His followers) and He has forgiven you, as a whole and (forgiven) ‘Ali, in particular. Verily I am the Messenger of Allah towards you; I do not love people just because they are from my family. This is Jibril; he informed me that the truly fortunate person is he who loves ‘Ali while he is alive and after his death. And the truly wretched person is he who hates ‘Ali while he is alive and after his death.”

Al Tabarani and others narrate — from Muhammad ibn ‘Abdullah al Hadrami — Jandal ibn Waliq narrated to us — Muhammad ibn ‘Umar al Mazini narrated to us — from ‘Abbad al Kulaybi — from Jafar ibn Muhammad — from his father — from ‘Ali ibn Hussain — from Fatimah al Sughra — from Hussain ibn ‘Ali — from his mother, Fatimah, the daughter of the Messenger of Allah salla Llahu ‘alayhi wa sallam who said…’’[1]

The chain of transmission is batil (false). It contains the following defects:

  • Muhammad ibn ‘Umar al Mazini could not be traced.
  • ‘Abbad ibn Suhayb al Kulaybi is matruk (suspected of forgery).[2]
  • Jandal ibn Walik al Taghlibi Abu ‘Ali al Kufi is himself a saduq (sincere) but da’if (weak) in his hadith.

Ibn al Jazri narrates (also) this version of the hadith.[3] However, he did not mention the narrator ‘Abbad al Kulaybi.
