Hadith 28

Fatimah radiya Llahu ‘anha came to the Prophet salla Llahu ‘alayhi wa sallam and said, “May peace be upon you, O Messenger of Allah.” He salla Llahu ‘alayhi wa sallam said, “May peace be upon you too, O my beloved daughter.” She said, “By Allah, there is no food in the house of ‘Ali this morning, O Messenger of Allah. And no food has entered between my two lips for the past five days. We have absolutely nothing. There is (also) nothing to drink in his house.” He salla Llahu ‘alayhi wa sallam said to her, “Come close to me.” Fatimah said, “I went close to him.” He said to me, “Insert your hand in my back.” She dropped her hand inside and noticed a stone between the shoulder blades of the Prophet salla Llahu ‘alayhi wa sallam that was tied to his turban (and) bound to the chest (i.e. the lower part of chest near the stomach). Fatimah screamed loudly. He salla Llahu ‘alayhi wa sallam said, “A fire has not been lit (i.e. for cooking) in the house of Muhammad for a month.” And then he said, “Do you not know ‘Ali’s rank with me? He sufficed me in my affair (i.e. when I first proclaimed the Message of Islam) and he was only twelve years old. He struck a sword (i.e. he fought in war) in front of me and he was only sixteen years old. He fought leading figures and he was only seventeen years old. He removed my grief and he was only twenty-two years old (i.e. by removing the gate of Khaybar alone), and there were fifty other people with him.” The face of Fatimah radiya Llahu ‘anha lit up; her feet continued moving from her place until she (eventually) came to ‘Ali radiya Llahu ‘anhu. The house was illuminated by the light on her face! ‘Ali said to her, “O daughter of Muhammad, you left my presence and your face was not in this state?” She said, “The Prophet salla Llahu ‘alayhi wa sallam informed me of your virtue.”

Ibn al Maghazili narrates — Muhammad ibn Ahmed ibn ‘Uthman informed us — Abu ‘Umar Muhammad ibn al ‘Abbas ibn Hayyawayh informed us idhnan (he granted us authority to transmit this hadith) — Abu ‘Abdullah al Hussain ibn ‘Ali ibn al Hussain al Asadi al Dahhan informed us — ‘Ali ibn al Hussain al Bazzar narrated to us — Ismail ibn Subayh narrated to us — Yahya ibn Miswar narrated to us — from ‘Ali ibn Hazawwar — from al Asbagh — from Abu Sa’id al Khudri radiya Llahu ‘anhu who raised the hadith (i.e. he said that the Prophet salla Llahu ‘alayhi wa sallam said).[1]

This hadith is munkar (unacceptable) and batil (false). It is replete with defects, including the following:

  • Ibn al Maghazili is da’if (weak)
  • ‘Ali ibn al Hazawwar is matruk (suspected of forgery)
  • Al Asbagh ibn Nubatah is matruk (suspected of forgery)
  • Al Khatib mentions a biography of al Dahhan; however, he mentions nothing of his status as a narrator.[2]
