The Prophet salla Llahu ‘alayhi wa sallam said, “‘Ali’s hijrah was early, his characteristics are charming, his bravery is admirable, and his ancestry is noble.” He (the questioner) said, “I am not asking you about this! Rather, he has proposed to my daughter and so I would like to know the extent to which this pleases you or upsets you.” And then Nabi salla Llahu ‘alayhi wa sallam said, “Verily, Fatimah is a part of me; I love what makes her happy and I dislike what makes her upset.” He said, “By the One who sent you with the truth as a Nabi, I will not marry her off to ‘Ali while Fatimah is alive.”
Ibn al Maghazili narrates — Abu al Hassan Muhammad ibn Muhammad ibn Makhlad al Bazzar informed us — Muhammad ibn al Hassan ibn ‘Abdullah Abu al Fath narrated to us — my father narrated to us — ‘Abbas narrated to us — Abu Salamah narrated to us — Abu ‘Awanah narrated to us — from Ismail ibn Salim — from ‘Amir that a man came to Nabi salla Llahu ‘alayhi wa sallam and said, “O Nabi of Allah, what are your thoughts of ‘Ali?” Nabi salla Llahu ‘alayhi wa sallam then said the hadith.[1]
This hadith is da’if (weak).
Ibn al Maghazili is da’if (weak) and Muhammad ibn al Hassan ibn ‘Abdullah Abu al Fath could not be traced.
The hadith with the following words is sahih (authentic):
From al Miswar ibn Makhramah, “‘Ali proposed to the daughter of Abu Jahl. Fatimah heard of this and went to Allah’s Messenger salla Llahu ‘alayhi wa sallam saying, ‘Your people think that you do not become angry for the sake of your daughters as ‘Ali is now going to marry the daughter of Abu Jahl.’ On that, Allah’s Messenger salla Llahu ‘alayhi wa sallam got up and after his recitation of the tashahhud; I heard him saying, ‘I married one of my daughters to Abu al ‘As ibn al Rabi’ (the husband of Zainab, the daughter of the Prophet salla Llahu ‘alayhi wa sallam) before Islam and he proved truthful in whatever he said to me. And verily, Fatimah is a part of me; I hate to see her being troubled. By Allah, the daughter of Allah’s Messenger salla Llahu ‘alayhi wa sallam and the daughter of Allah’s enemy cannot be married to one man.’ So ‘Ali gave up the proposal.”[2]
