Hadith 24

في قوله: سَيَجۡعَلُ لَهُمُ ٱلرَّحۡمَٰنُ وُدّٗا [مريم:96] قال: المحبة في صدور المؤمنين نزلت في علي بن أبي طالب كرم الله وجهه.

Regarding the verse: ‘…the Most Merciful will appoint for them affection,’[1] the Prophet salla Llahu ‘alayhi wa sallam said, “Love in the hearts of the believers was revealed regarding ‘Ali ibn Abi Talib (May Allah ennoble his face).”

Al Tabarani narrates — from ‘Awn ibn Salam — Bishr ibn ‘Umarah narrated to us — from Abu Rawq — from al Dahhak — from Ibn ‘Abbas.[2]

Bishr ibn ‘Umarah is da’if (weak). In fact, al Daraqutni says he is matruk (suspected of forgery).

Al Dahhak did not meet Ibn ‘Abbas.

Ibn al Maghazili narrates — from Yusuf ibn Ya’qub ibn Yusuf — Muhammad ibn al Harith narrated to us — Ishaq ibn Bishr narrated to us — Khalid ibn Yazid narrated to us — from Hamzah al Zayyat — from Abu Ishaq — from al Baraʾ ibn ‘Azib who said that the Messenger of Allah salla Llahu ‘alayhi wa sallam said to ‘Ali, “O ‘Ali, say, ‘O Allah, grant me a promise, and grant me affection with You, and place my love in the hearts of the believers.’” And then the following verse was revealed regarding ‘Ali ibn Abi Talib radiya Llahu ‘anhu, Indeed, those who have believed and done righteous deeds—the Most Merciful will appoint for them affection.[3][4]

Yusuf ibn Ya’qub ibn Yusuf is da’if (weak).[5]

Ishaq ibn Bishr is either (Ishaq ibn Bishr) al Bukhari or (Ishaq ibn Bishr) al Kahili. Both of them are kadhdhabs (liars).

Ibn Taymiyyah spoke at length on how, in terms of its meaning, the hadith is batil (false).[6] I have cited this in the original work.

In short, the hadith is batil (false).
