Sadaqah ibn al Muthanna said, I heard my grandfather Riyah ibn al Harith mention that he witnessed al Mughirah ibn Shu’bah. He was in the Grand Masjid of Kufah. (The People) were gathered all around, right and left. Until a man from the inhabitants of al Madinah, known as Sa’id ibn Zaid ibn Nufayl, approached. Al Mughirah welcomed him and made him sit near his feet on the elevated chair. Meanwhile, a man from the inhabitants of Kufah, known as Qais ibn ‘Alqamah, entered. He faced al Mughirah and began cursing.
The man from al Madinah said, “O Mughir(ah) ibn Shu’b(ah)! Who is this lad cursing?”
Al Mughirah said, “He cursed ‘Ali ibn Abi Talib.”
He said to him twice, “O Mughir(ah) ibn Shu’b(ah)! Do I hear the Companions of the Prophet salla Llahu ‘alayhi wa sallam being cursed in your presence and (yet) you do not renounce (such actions) nor react? I swear by what my ears heard and what my heart remembered—I would never falsely narrate (something) from him after he is gone such that when I meet him, he asks me (about it)—that the Prophet salla Llahu ‘alayhi wa sallam said, ‘Abu Bakr is in Jannat. ‘Umar is in Jannat. ‘Uthman is in Jannat. ‘Ali is in Jannat. Talhah is in Jannat. Al Zubair is in Jannat. ‘Abdul Rahman ibn ‘Awf is in Jannat. Sa’d is in Jannat.’ If I so wanted, I could have named the ninth person (in Jannat).”
He said, “The people of the masjid exited imploring him, by Allah, ‘O Companion of the Messenger of Allah! Who is the ninth (person)?’ He said, ‘You are imploring me by Allah, and Allah is the Mighty. I am the ninth of the believers, and the Prophet salla Llahu ‘alayhi wa sallam is the tenth.”
He followed this up (and said), “By Allah! A (single) battle witnessed by one of them for (only) one day in the path of Allah with the Messenger of Allah salla Llahu ‘alayhi wa sallam is more virtuous than (all) the (good) deeds of one of you, even if he was granted the lifespan of Nuh.”
This hadith is transmitted by Sa’id ibn Zaid ibn Nufayl, ‘Abdul Rahman ibn ‘Awf, ibn ‘Umar, and Ibn Mas’ud radiya Llahu ‘anhum.
The most authentic version is Sa’id ibn Zaid ibn Nufayl’s. Therefore, I will restrict myself to only his version.
Ibn Abi Shaybah narrates with the following chain of transmission: Muhammad ibn Bishr narrated to us — Sadaqah ibn al Muthanna narrated to us (and) said: ‘I heard my grandfather Riyah[1] ibn al Harith mention… (the hadith).”[2]
This hadith has an authentic chain of transmission.
Imam al Tirmidhi[3] and others also narrate it. The remaining shawahid (witness reports) are all disputed. Al Albani (also) mentioned this hadith.[4] I have explained this in the original work.
[1] This word appears as ‘Rabah’ in the print. However, the way I have mentioned it is correct.
