Hadith 147: “My name in the Qurʾan is, ‘By the sun and its brightness,’[1] and the name of ‘Ali ibn Abi Talib is, ‘And [by] the moon when it follows it,’….

Hadith 148: I asked the Messenger of Allah salla Llahu ‘alayhi wa sallam, “O Messenger of Allah, verily Allah does not send a Prophet except that He makes clear to him who will take charge after him, did He clarify for you?” He said, “No.” Then I asked him (again) after that and he said, “Yes, ‘Ali ibn Abi Talib.”

Hadith 147

“My name in the Qurʾan is, ‘By the sun and its brightness,’[1] and the name of ‘Ali ibn Abi Talib is, ‘And [by] the moon when it follows it,’[2] and the name of al Hassan and al Hussain is, ‘And [by] the day when it displays it,’[3] and the name of Banu Umayyah is, ‘By the night when it covers it.’”[4] Then the Messenger of Allah salla Llahu ‘alayhi wa sallam said, “Verily Allah sent me as a Messenger to His creation. I came to Quraysh and said to them, ‘O community of Quraysh, verily I have come to you with the glory of the Dunya and the honour of the Akhirah. I am the Messenger of Allah.’ They said, ‘You are a liar. You are not the Messenger of Allah salla Llahu ‘alayhi wa sallam.’ (The Prophet salla Llahu ‘alayhi wa sallam continued) Then I went to Banu Hashim and said to them, ‘O community of Banu Hashim, verily I have come to you with the glory of the Dunya and the honour of the Akhirah. I am the Messenger of Allah.’ They said, ‘You have spoken the truth.’ (The Prophet salla Llahu ‘alayhi wa sallam continued) Their believer, ‘Ali ibn Abi Talib, brought faith in me and their disbeliever believed in me (i.e. Abu Talib); thereby he (‘Ali) was able to protect me from the asl (Banu Hashim), i.e. from Abu Talib. Allah sent His standard and the Prophet salla Llahu ‘alayhi wa sallam embedded among Banu Hashim. The standard of Allah is among us until the Last Hour comes and the standard of Iblis is among Banu Umayyah until the Last Hour comes. They are our enemies and their followers are the enemies of our followers.”

Ibn ‘Asakir and Ibn al Jawzi narrate this hadith from al Khatib — Al Hassan ibn Abi Bakr Ahmed ibn Ibrahim ibn Shadhan narrated to us — Abu al Hassan ‘Ali ibn ‘Amr al Hariri narrated to me, he used to write hadith with us and I would ask him — Muhammad ibn Ismail al Raqi narrated to us — Muhammad ibn ‘Amr al Hawdi al Bazzaz narrated to us — Musa ibn Idris narrated to us — from his father — from Jarir — from Layth — from Mujahid — from Ibn ‘Abbas who said, “I heard the Messenger of Allah…”[5]

Al Khatib said, “This hadith is very munkar (unacceptable). In fact, it is mawdu’ (fabricated). There are three majhul (unknown) narrators in the chain of transmission, they are: Muhammad ibn ‘Amr al Hawdi, Musa ibn Idris, and his father. It is not authentic in any of its variant versions.”

Layth is Ibn Abi Sulaim. He is da’if (weak).

The following people followed Ibn al Jawzi and al Khatib in ruling the hadith a fabrication: al Dhahabi, Ibn Hajar, al Suyuti, Ibn ‘Iraq, and al Shawkani.[6]
