إني لا أحل لأحد أن يتكنى بكنيتي، ولا يتسمى باسمي، إلا مولود لعلي، من غير ابنتي فاطمة عليها السلام، فقد نحلته اسمي وكنيتي، وهو محمد بن علي. قال جعفر بن محمد: يعني ابن الحنفية.
I do not permit anyone to keep my kunyah (agnomen) nor my name except for the children of ‘Ali that are not from Fatimah. Verily he has been gifted with my name and my kunyah—he is Muhammad ibn ‘Ali. Jafar ibn Muhammad said, “That is Ibn al Hanafiyyah.”
This hadith is narrated by Ibn al Maghazili — Abu al Hassan Ahmed ibn al Muzaffar informed us — Abu Muhammad ibn ‘Abdullah ibn Muhammad ibn ‘Uthman al Muzani (known as Ibn al Saqqaʾ al Hafiz) informed us — Muhammad ibn Muhammad ibn al Ash’ath informed us — Musa ibn Ismail informed me — my father informed us — from his father— from his grandfather, Jafar ibn Muhammad — from his father — from his grandfather, ‘Ali ibn al Hussain — from his father — from his grandfather, ‘Ali ibn Abi Talib radiya Llahu ‘anhu who said, “The Messenger of Allah salla Llahu ‘alayhi wa sallam said…”[1]
This hadith is mawdu’ (fabricated).
Muhammad ibn Muhammad ibn al Ash’ath is suspected of fabricating hadith.
Musa ibn Ismail is Ibn Musa ibn Jafar ibn Muhammad. He and his father could not be traced.
Ibn al Maghazili, as mentioned previously, is da’if (weak).
