Chapter Three

Examples of Shia Interpolation of the Qur’an

1. Allah subhanahu wa ta ‘ala states in the noble Qur’an:

And whoever obeys Allah and His Messenger has certainly attained a great attainment.[1]

However Abu Basir — narrates from Abu ‘Abdullah (al Sadiq) regarding it:

And whoever obeys Allah and His Messenger with regard to the Wilayah of ‘Ali and the Imams after him has certainly attained a great attainment.[2]

He said, “this is how the verse was revealed.”

2. Allah subhanahu wa ta ‘ala states in the noble Qur’an:

And We had already taken a promise from Adam before, but he forgot; and We found not in him determination.[3]

It is reported from ‘Abdullah ibn Sinan — who narrates from Abu ‘Abdullah (al Sadiq) regarding the verse:

And We had already taken a promise of words (i.e. commands) about Muhammad, ‘Ali, Fatimah, Hassan, Hussain and the Imams of their offspring; from Adam before, but he forgot.[4]

He said, “by Allah, this is how the verse was revealed upon Muhammad salla Llahu ‘alayhi wa sallam.”

3. Allah subhanahu wa ta ‘ala states in the noble Qur’an:

How wretched is that for which they sold themselves — that they would disbelieve in what Allah has revealed through [their] outrage that Allah would send down His favour upon whom He wills from among His servants.[5]

Jabir narrates from — Abu Jafar (al Baqir) — who said:

Jibril ‘alayh al Salam came down with the following verse upon Muhammad salla Llahu ‘alayhi wa sallam in this manner:

How wretched is that for which they sold themselves — that they would disbelieve in what Allah has revealed regarding ‘Ali through (their) outrage.[6]

4. Allah subhanahu wa ta ‘ala states in the noble Qur’an:

And if you are in doubt about what We have sent down upon Our Servant [Muhammad], then produce a surah the like thereof.[7]

It is reported from Jabir — who said: Jibril ‘alayh al Salam revealed the following verse to Muhammad salla Llahu ‘alayhi wa sallam like this:

And if you are in doubt about what we have sent down (i.e., the Qur’an) upon Our Servant (i.e. Nabi Muhammad salla Llahu ‘alayhi wa sallam) regarding ‘Ali then produce a surah the like thereof.[8]

5. Allah subhanahu wa ta ‘ala states in the noble Qur’an:

O you who were given the Scripture, believe in what We have sent down (to Muhammad), confirming that which is with you, before We obliterate faces.[9]

and also:

O mankind, there has come to you a conclusive proof from your Rabb, and We have sent down to you a clear light.[10]

Which the Shia distort into one fabricated verse:

It is narrated from Abu ‘Abdullah (al Sadiq) — that he said:

Jibril ‘alayh al Salam revealed the following verse to Muhammad salla Llahu ‘alayhi wa sallam in this manner:

O you who believe, there is a clear light in what we have revealed regarding ‘Ali.[11]

6. Allah subhanahu wa ta ‘ala states in the noble Qur’an:

But if they had done what they were instructed, it would have been better for them and a firmer position (for them in faith).[12]

It is reported from Jabir — who narrated from Abu Jafar (al Baqir):

But if they had done what they were instructed regarding ‘Ali, it would have been better for them.[13]

7. Allah subhanahu wa ta ‘ala states in the noble Qur’an:

But is it (not) that every time a messenger came to you, (O Children of Israel), with what your souls did not desire, you were arrogant? And a party (of messengers) you denied and another party you killed.[14]

It has been reported from Jabir — who narrates from Abu Jafar (al Baqir):

But is it (not) that every time Muhammad came to you, with what your souls did not desire about the Wilayah of ‘Ali, you were arrogant? And a party of the family members of Muhammad you denied and another party you killed.[15]

8. Allah subhanahu wa ta ‘ala states in the noble Qur’an:

Difficult for those who associate others with Allah is that to which you invite them.

It is reported from Muhammad ibn Sinan who narrates from — ‘Ali al Rida regarding the verse:

Difficult for those who associate others with the Wilayah of ‘Ali is that to which you, O Muhammad, invite them of the Wilayah of ‘Ali.[16]

9. Allah subhanahu wa ta ‘ala states in the noble Qur’an:

That is because they said to those who disliked what Allah sent down, “We will obey you in part of the matter.”[17]

It has been reported from Abu ‘Abdullah (al Sadiq) regarding the verse that Jibril ‘alayh al Salam revealed it to Muhammad salla Llahu ‘alayhi wa sallam as follows:

That is because they said to those who disliked what Allah sent down regarding ‘Ali, “We will obey you in part of the matter.”[18]

10. Allah subhanahu wa ta ‘ala states in the noble Qur’an:

But We will surely cause those who disbelieve to taste a severe punishment, and We will surely recompense them for the worst of what they had been doing.[19]

It has been reported from Abu Basir who narrates from — Abu ‘Abdullah (al Sadiq) regarding the verse:

But We will surely cause those who disbelieve by neglecting the Wilayah of Amir al Mu’minin to taste a severe punishment in this world, and We will surely recompense them for the worst of what they had been doing.[20]

11. Allah subhanahu wa ta ‘ala states in the noble Qur’an:

(They will be told), “That is because, when Allah was called upon alone, you disbelieved…”[21]

It is reported from al Walid ibn Subayh who narrated from — Abu ‘Abdullah (al Sadiq):

(They will be told), “That is because, when Allah was called upon alone and the people of Wilayah, you disbelieved…”[22]

12. Allah subhanahu wa ta ‘ala states in the noble Qur’an:

A supplicant asked for a punishment bound to happen, to the disbelievers; of it there is no preventer.[23]

It is reported from Abu Basir who narrated from — Abu ‘Abdullah (al Sadiq):

A supplicant asked for a punishment bound to happen, to the disbelievers of the Wilayah of ‘Ali; of it there is no preventer.[24]

Then he said, “by Allah, this is how Jibril ‘alayh al Salam revealed it to Muhammad salla Llahu ‘alayhi wa sallam.”

13. Allah subhanahu wa ta ‘ala states in the noble Qur’an:

Indeed, you are in differing speech. Deluded away from the Qur’an is he who is deluded.[25]

Abu Hamzah narrates from — Abu Jafar (al Baqir) regarding the verse:

Indeed, you are in differing speech regarding the Wilayah, deluded away from it is he who is deluded.[26]

14. Allah subhanahu wa ta ‘ala states in the noble Qur’an:

But those who wronged changed (those words) to a statement other than that which had been said to them, so We sent down upon those who wronged a punishment from the sky because they were defiantly disobeying.[27]

Abu Hamzah narrates from Abu Jafar (al Baqir):

Jibril ‘alayh al Salam revealed the following verse to Muhammad salla Llahu ‘alayhi wa sallam in this manner:

But those who wronged the right of the family members of Muhammad changed (those words) to a statement other than that which had been said to them, so We sent down upon those who wronged the right of the family members of Muhammad a punishment (i.e., plague) from the sky because they were defiantly disobeying.[28]

15. Allah subhanahu wa ta ‘ala states in the noble Qur’an:

Indeed, those who disbelieve and commit wrong (or injustice) — never will Allah forgive them, nor will He guide them to a path.[29]

Abu Hamzah narrates from — Abu Jafar (al Baqir):

Jibril ‘alayh al Salam revealed this verse in this manner:

Indeed those who commit wrong (or injustice) to the family members of Muhammad never will Allah forgive them, nor will He guide them a path.[30]

16. Allah subhanahu wa ta ‘ala states in the noble Qur’an:

O Mankind, the Rasul has come to you with the truth from your Rabb, so believe; it is better for you. But if you disbelieve — then indeed, to Allah belongs whatever is in the heavens and earth.[31]

Abu Hamzah narrates from — Abu Jafar (al Baqir):

O mankind, the Rasul has come to you with the truth from your Rabb regarding the Wilayah of ‘Ali, so believe; it is better for you. But if you disbelieve in the Wilayah of ‘Ali then indeed, to Allah belongs whatever is in the heavens and earth.[32]

17. Allah subhanahu wa ta ‘ala states in the noble Qur’an:

And say, “Do (as you will), for Allah will see your deeds, and (so, will) His Rasul and the believers.”[33]

Hussain ibn Miyah — from whomsoever informed him — he said:

A man read to Abu ‘Abdullah(al Sadiq):

And say, “Do (as you will), for Allah will see your deeds, and (so, will) His Rasul and the believers.”

He then said, “the verse was not revealed like that, rather it was revealed in this manner:

And trustworthy ones.

And we are the Ma’munun (the trustworthy ones).[34]

18. Allah subhanahu wa ta ‘ala states in the noble Qur’an:

(Allah) said, “this is a path (of return) to Me (that is) straight.”[35]

Hisham ibn al Hakam narrates from — Abu ‘Abdullah (al Sadiq) he said:

This is the straight path of ‘Ali.[36]

19. Allah subhanahu wa ta ‘ala states in the noble Qur’an:

but most of the people refuse except disbelief.[37]

Abu Hamzah narrates from — Abu Jafar (al Baqir):

Jibril ‘alayh al Salam revealed this verse in following manner:

But most of the people refused to accept the Wilayah of ‘Ali except disbelief.

He also said regarding the verse:

And say, “the truth is from your Rabb, so whoever wills let him believe; and whoever wills let him disbelieve.” Indeed, We have prepared for the wrongdoers a fire.[38]

That Jibril brought it in the following manner:

And say, “the truth is from your Rabb about the Wilayah of ‘Ali, so whoever wills — let him believe; and whoever wills — let him disbelieve.” Indeed, We have prepared for the wrongdoers to the family members of Muhammad a fire.

Abu ‘Abdullah (al Sadiq) said: “This is how the verse was revealed.”[39]

20. Allah subhanahu wa ta ‘ala states in the noble Qur’an:

but Allah will perfect His light, although the disbelievers dislike it.[40]

Muhammad ibn al Fudayl narrates:

Musa al Kazim recited:

Allah will perfect His light, although the disbelievers of the Wilayah of ‘Ali dislike it.

I asked, “is this the revelation? And he answered, “yes.”[41]

21. Allah subhanahu wa ta ‘ala states in the noble Qur’an:

When the hypocrites come to you, (O Muhammad), they say, “we testify that you are the Rasul of Allah.” And Allah knows that you are His Rasul, and Allah testifies that the hypocrites are liars. They have taken their oaths as a cover, so they averted (people) from the way of Allah. Indeed, it was evil that they were doing. That is because they believed, and then they disbelieved; so their hearts were sealed over, and they do not understand.[42]

Muhammad ibn al Fudayl narrates from the Musa al Kazim:

When the hypocrites regarding the Wilayah of your Wasi come to you, (O Muhammad), they say, “we testify that you are the Rasul of Allah.” And Allah testifies that the hypocrites regarding the Wilayah of ‘Ali are liars. They have taken their oaths as a cover, so they averted (people) from the way of Allah. Indeed, it was evil that they were doing. That is because they believed in your nubuwwah, and then they disbelieved in the Wilayah of your Wasi; so Allah sealed over their hearts, and they do not understand.[43]

22. Allah subhanahu wa ta ‘ala states in the noble Qur’an:

(It is) a revelation from the Rabb of the worlds. And if Muhammad had made up about Us some (false) sayings, we would have seized him by the right hand; then We would have cut from him the aorta.[44]

Muhammad ibn al Fudayl narrates from the Musa al Kazim:

Indeed the Wilayah of ‘Ali is a revelation from the Rabb of the worlds. And if Muhammad had made up about Us some (false) sayings, We would have seized him by the right hand; Then We would have cut from him the aorta.[45]

23. Allah subhanahu wa ta ‘ala states in the noble Qur’an:

And indeed, the Qur’an is a reminder for the righteous. And indeed, We know that among you are deniers. And indeed, it will be (a cause of) regret upon the disbelievers. And indeed, it is the truth of certainty. So exalt the name of your Rabb, the Most Great.[46]

Muhammad ibn al Fudayl narrates from Musa al Kazim:

Indeed the Wilayah of ‘Ali is a reminder for the righteous. And indeed We know that among you are deniers. And indeed ‘Ali will be (a cause of) regret upon the disbelievers. And indeed his Wilayah is the truth of certainty. So exalt the name of your Rabb, O Muhammad, the Most Great.[47]

24. Allah subhanahu wa ta ‘ala states in the noble Qur’an:

Say, “indeed, there will never protect me from Allah anyone (if I should disobey), nor will I find in other than Him a refuge. But (I have for you) only notification from Allah, and His messages.” And whoever disobeys Allah and His Rasul — then indeed, for him is the fire of Hell; they will abide therein forever.[48]

Muhammad ibn al Fudayl narrates:

Musa al Kazim recited:

Say, “Indeed, there will never protect me from Allah anyone besides him if I should disobey him, nor will I find in other than Him a refuge. But (I have for you) only notification from Allah, and His messages regarding ‘Ali.”

I asked, “is this the revelation?” and he said, “yes.” To emphasise this he then said:

And whoever disobeys Allah and His Rasul regarding the Wilayah of ‘Ali — then indeed, for him is the fire of Hell; they will abide therein forever.[49]

25. Allah subhanahu wa ta ‘ala states in the noble Qur’an:

Indeed, it is We who have sent down to you, (O Muhammad), the Qur’an progressively.[50]

Muhammad ibn al Fudayl:

Musa al Kazim recited:

Indeed, it is We who sent down to you (O Muhammad), the Qur’an with the Wilayah of ‘Ali progressively.

I then asked, “is this revelation?” He replied, “yes, it is.”[51]

26. Allah subhanahu wa ta ‘ala states in the noble Qur’an:

And He misleads not except the defiantly disobedient, who break the covenant of Allah after contracting it and sever that which Allah has ordered to be joined.[52]

And He misleads not except the defiantly disobedient, who break the covenant of Allah after contracting it regarding ‘Ali and sever that which Allah has ordered to be joined.[53]

27. Allah subhanahu wa ta ‘ala states in the noble Qur’an:

We do not abrogate a verse or cause it to be forgotten except that We bring forth (one) better than it or similar to it.[54]

The Imam has stated that the words “similar to it” were added, what was revealed was only “We bring forth better than it.”[55]

28. Allah subhanahu wa ta ‘ala states in the noble Qur’an:

And thus we have made you a just community

It has been reported from the ‘infallible’ Imam that this verse was revealed as :

And thus We have made you to be just A’immah (plural of Imam).[56]

29. Allah subhanahu wa ta ‘ala states in the noble Qur’an:

You are the best nation produced (as an example) for mankind. You enjoin what is right and forbid what is wrong and believe in Allah.[57]

Ibn ‘Umair narrates from — Ibn Sinan:

I read in the presence of Abu ‘Abdullah (al Sadiq):

You are the best nation produced (as an example) for mankind.

Abu ‘Abdullah (al Sadiq) then said, “the best nation killing Amir al Mu’minin, Hassan and Hussain?” I then asked, “may I be sacrificed for you, how was the verse revealed?”

He answered, “the verse was revealed like this:

You are the best A’immah (plural of Imam) produced (as an example) for mankind, do you not see the praise of Allah for them, ‘you enjoin what is right and forbid what is wrong’?”[58]

30. Allah subhanahu wa ta ‘ala states in the noble Qur’an:

And if, when they wronged themselves, they had come to you, [O Muhammad], and asked forgiveness of Allah and the Messenger had asked forgiveness for them, they would have found Allah Accepting of repentance and Merciful.[59]

Ibn Abi ‘Umair narrates from — Ibn ‘Udhnayh who narrates from — Zurarah from — Abu Jafar (al Baqir) he said:

And if, when they wronged themselves, they had come to you, O ‘Ali, and asked forgiveness of Allah and the Messenger had asked forgiveness for them, they would have found Allah Accepting of repentance and Merciful.[60]

This is how the verse was revealed.
