Priceless gems derived from the science of genealogy

‘Umar al Atraf

Ibn al Tiqtaqa writes about ‘Umar al Atraf:

As for ‘Umar al Atraf ibn ‘Ali ibn Abi Talib ‘alayh al Salam, his mother and the mother of his twin sister Ruqayyah was Umm Habib bint Rabi’ah ibn Yahya ibn al ‘Abd ibn ‘Alqamah ibn al Harith ibn Ubaid ibn Sa’d ibn Zuhayr ibn Huthaym ibn Bakr ibn Habib ibn ‘Amr ibn Ghanam ibn Tha’lab ibn Wa’il ibn Qasit ibn Manbat ibn Afsa ibn Da’mi ibn Judaylah ibn Asad ibn Rabi’ah ibn Nizar.[1]

Thus her ancestry meets with that of the Prophet salla Llahu ‘alayhi wa sallam at Nizar.

Ibn ‘Inabah writes:

The daughter of Qasim ibn Muhammad ibn Jafar was married to Talhah ibn ‘Umar ibn ‘Abdullah ibn Ma’mar al Taymi, and she bore him Ibrahim ibn Talhah who was called Ibn al Khams, referring to the five mothers mentioned.[2]

Five mothers refer to the mothers (and grandmothers) of Talhah ibn ‘Umar.

His mother was the daughter of Qasim ibn Muhammad ibn Jafar,

Her mother was the daughter of ‘Abdullah ibn Jafar,

Whose mother was Zainab bint ‘Ali ibn Abi Talib,

Whose mother was Fatimah bint Rasulillah salla Llahu ‘alayhi wa sallam,

Whose mother was Khadijah bint Khuwayid ibn Asad ibn ‘Abdul ‘Uzza ibn ‘Abd Manaf.

Ibn ‘Inabah writes:

Yahya ibn ‘Abdullah ibn Muhammad ibn Yahya al Daylami had one son, whose mother was Khadijah bint Ibrahim ibn Talhah ibn ‘Umar ibn ‘Ubaidullah ibn Ma’mar ibn ‘Uthman ibn ‘Amr ibn Ka’b ibn Sa’d ibn Taym ibn Murrah ibn Ka’b ibn Lu’ayy ibn Ghalib.[3]

A woman having the most unique noble ancestry

Ibn Habib says in –al Muhabbar (pg. 404), and similarly Ibn Qutaybah in al Ma’arig (pg. 200):

A woman whose grandfathers are the Prophet salla Llahu ‘alayhi wa sallam, Abu Bakr, ‘Umar, ‘Uthman, ‘Ali, Talhah, and Zubair radiya Llahu ‘anhum:

Hafsah bint Muhammad ibn ‘Abdullah ibn ‘Amr ibn ‘Uthman. Her mother was Khadijah bint ‘Uthman ibn ‘Urwah ibn Zubair. The mother of ‘Urwah was Asma’ bint Abi Bakr. Muhammad’s mother was Fatimah bint Hussain ibn ‘Ali. The mother of Fatimah bint Hussain was Umm Ishaq bint Talhah ibn ‘Ubaidullah. The mother of ‘Abdullah ibn ‘Amr ibn ‘Uthman ibn ‘Affan was Hafsah bint ‘Abdullah ibn ‘Umar ibn al Khattab, it has also been said that her name was Zainab bint ‘Abdullah ibn ‘Umar.

Ibn Habib neglected to mention the manner in which the Prophet salla Llahu ‘alayhi wa sallam is her grandfather as well; that is through Fatimah al Zahra’ radiya Llahu ‘anha, mother of Hussain ibn ‘Ali radiya Llahu ‘anhu. The following chart will make this more apparent:

It is extremely rare to find a Tabi’i having these eight links in their ancestry, and to the best of my knowledge there is no other besides her. As for the Companions, I will shortly mention a female Companion who has nine familial links with the Prophet salla Llahu ‘alayhi wa sallam, and there is no other Companion having as many familial links to the Prophet salla Llahu ‘alayhi wa sallam.
