Anjashah
Sayyidina Anjashah radiya Llahu ‘anhu was an Abyssinian slave of Rasulullah salla Llahu ‘alayhi wa sallam. His agnomen was Abu Mariyah.[1] He accompanied Rasulullah salla Llahu ‘alayhi wa sallam on his journey to Makkah for the Farewell Pilgrimage, driving the camels carrying the wives of Rasulullah salla Llahu ‘alayhi wa sallam.[2]
He had a melodious voice and would thus urge on the camels by singing. His chanting made the camels advance with speed so Rasulullah salla Llahu ‘alayhi wa sallam told him, “May Allah be merciful to you, O Anjashah! Drive the camels slowly, as they are carrying glass vessels!”[3] His usage of a pleasant metaphor and cautioning the camel-driver speak volumes of the love and compassion Rasulullah salla Llahu ‘alayhi wa sallam had for the Mothers of the Believers.
