Abu Rayyah Rejects the Hadith, “Avarice and Iman Cannot Get Together in One Heart”

On page 260, Abu Rayyah quotes the hadith:

و لا يجتمع شح و ايمان فى قلب واحد

Iman and avarice cannot get together in one heart.

Our comment: Al Majlisi has a chapter regarding miserliness. He quotes this hadith, which you have rejected, in that chapter from Abu Hurairah radiya Llahu ‘anhu. Qa’qa’ ibn al Lajlaj reports from Abu Hurairah that the Messenger salla Llahu ‘alayhi wa sallam said:

لا يجتمع الشح و الايمان فى قلب عبد ابدا

Iman and avarice can never be together in the heart of a slave.[1]

He also reports from al Jazi who narrates from Imam Jafar from his father:

لا يؤمن رجل فيه الشح والحسد والجبن

A man who has avarice, jealousy, and cowardice in him cannot be a believer.[2]

He reports from Abu Sa’id al Khudri from the Messenger salla Llahu ‘alayhi wa sallam:

خصلتان لا يجتمعان فى مسلم البخل و سوء الخلق

Two qualities will never gather in a Muslim, miserliness and bad manners.[3]
