On page 176, he quotes the hadith:
لن يدخل أحدا عمله الجنة قالوا ولا أنت يا رسول الله؟ قال:لا ولا أنا
Nobody’s actions will gain him entry into Jannat.
They asked, “Not even you, O Messenger?”
He replied, “No. Not even me.”[1]
He comments:
يضرب بهذا الحديث عرض الحائط لمخالفته كتاب الله في كثير من آياته ، وحسبك منها: { إِنَّ هَذَا كَانَ لَكُمْ جَزَاءَ وَّكَانَ سَعْيُكُمْ مَشْكُوْرًا}
This hadith deserves to go in the trash can as it opposes many verses of the Book of Allah. We will suffice upon the verse, “[And it will be said,] Indeed, this is for you a reward, and your effort has been appreciated.”[2]
A group of Shia exegetes such as al Tabarsi, al Fayd al Kashani, ‘Abd ‘Ali al Huwayzi, al Mirza Muhammad al Mashhadi, ‘Abdullah Shibr and others have quoted in their commentaries from Majma’ al Bayan under the verse:
من يصرف عنه يومئذ فقد رحمه وذلك الفوز المبين
He from whom it is averted that Day—[Allah] has granted him mercy. And that is the clear attainment.[3]
Al Majlisi said whilst explaining the meaning of this verse:
( ويحتمل أن يكون معنى الآية أنه لا يصرف العذاب عند أحد إلابرحمة الله كما روي أن النبي والذي نفسي بيده ما من الناس أحد يدخل الجنة بعمله قالوا: ولا أنت يا رسول الله قال: ولا أنا إلا أن يتغمدني الله برحمته منه وفضل …
It is possible that this verse means that the punishment will not be averted from anyone except by the mercy of Allah, just as it has been narrated from the Prophet salla Llahu ‘alayhi wa sallam that he said, “By the oath of the being in whose control my life is, none will enter Jannat because of his actions.’ They asked, “Not even you, O Messenger?” The Prophet salla Llahu ‘alayhi wa sallam replied, “Not even me, except if Allah enshrouds me in His mercy and favour.”[4]
NEXT⇒ ‘Abdul Hussain Rejects the Hadith that Nabi salla Llahu ‘alayhi wa sallam was a Shepherd
[1] As per habit, ‘Abdul Hussain only quoted a portion of the narration. The next sentence is, “except if Allah enshrouds me in His favour and mercy.” Sahih al Bukhari, al Marda, al Riqaq; Sahih Muslim, Sifat al Qiyamah wa l-Jannat wa l-Nar.
[2] Surah al Insan: 22.
[3] Surah al An’am: 16.
[4] Majma’ al Bayan, 3/23; Tafsir al Safi, 2/111; Nur al Thaqalayn, 1/706; Kanz al Daqa’iq, 3/242; al Mahajjah, 7/190, Kitab al Sabr wa l-Shukr, pg. 265, Kitab al Khawf wa l-Raja’, 6/282; Kitab Dhamm al Kibr wa l-’Ujb; Bihar al Anwar, 7/11; Tafsir Min Hady al Qur’an, 13/489.
