Hadith 13

We were with the Messenger of Allah salla Llahu ‘alayhi wa sallam while he was distributing (something which was given to him) when Dhu al Khuwaysirah, a man from the tribe of Banu Tamim came and said, “O Messenger of Allah salla Llahu ‘alayhi wa sallam! Be just!”

The Prophet salla Llahu ‘alayhi wa sallam said, “Woe unto you! Who is just, if I am not? If I was not just, then, in that case, you would be a failure and a loser.”

‘Umar said, “O Messenger of Allah salla Llahu ‘alayhi wa sallam! Permit me to chop his head off!”

The Prophet salla Llahu ‘alayhi wa sallam said, “Leave him, for he has companions who pray and fast in such a way that you will consider your prayers and fasting insignificant compared to theirs. They recite the Qur’an but it does not go beyond their throats (i.e. they do not act on it). They will leave Islam as swiftly as an arrow penetrates through a game’s body; upon seeing the arrowhead, nothing (of the game’s blood or meat) will be found. Then, upon seeing its notch, nothing will be found (again). Then, upon seeing its nadi—the shaft of the arrow, nothing will be found (again). Then, upon seeing the fletching (of the arrow), nothing (again) will be found. The arrow travelled too fast for the blood and excretions to smear. The sign by which they will be recognized is that among them there will be a black man, one of whose arms will resemble a womans breast or a lump of meat moving loosely. They will appear when there will be dissension amongst the people.”

I testify that I heard this narration from the Messenger of Allah salla Llahu ‘alayhi wa sallam and I testify that ‘Ali ibn Abi Talib fought against such people, and I was in his company. He ordered that the man (described by the Prophet salla Llahu ‘alayhi wa sallam) should be sought out (amongst the dead). The man was (eventually) brought. I looked at him and noticed that he looked exactly as the Prophet salla Llahu ‘alayhi wa sallam had described him.

Imams al Bukhari and Muslim narrate this hadith from Abu Sa’id al Khudri radiya Llahu ‘anhu.[1]

They also narrate (the same hadith) from Jabir ibn ‘Abdullah.[2]

Imam al Bukhari (and others) (also) narrates this hadith from Ibn Mas’ud radiya Llahu ‘anhu.[3]

Imam Muslim (also) narrates (this hadith) from ‘Ubaidullah ibn Abi Rafi’, the mawla of the Messenger of Allah salla Llahu ‘alayhi wa sallam.[4]

He (i.e. Imam Muslim)—and others—narrates a lengthier version (of this hadith) from Zaid ibn Wahb al Juhani radiya Llahu ‘anhu.[5]
